Since the Sentinel is currently running a series of articles on the several “Wolf Recovery Projects” across the country, I considered it a good time to chime in. As a hunter, a student of the Bible, and possessing what I believe to be a reasonable amount of common sense, I passionately oppose the “Re-wolving of America.” I have a personal friend who was a state game warden in Idaho but in frustration took an early retirement over the devastation of the state’s elk herd due to the proliferation of the wolf population. His observations were firsthand, but his voice of reason was totally ignored. The science and the facts speak for themselves and are now well documented, so the remainder of this column will deal with the Biblical aspects of this liberal insanity.
Ancient Palestine was a region where a large part of wealth consisted of flocks of sheep; consequently, the habits of wolves became thoroughly well-known and were often used as examples of the behavior of mankind. According to Jesus Christ, wolves are particularly destructive to flocks of sheep (John 10:12); but what is more instructive is that the entire context of the chapter is a comparison of sheep to people. In general, wolves kill, torment, and persecute the flock (Matthew 10:16-23). Is it a coincidence that there appears to be a direct correlation between the adoration of the wolf by the Left and an increasing hostility toward the Christian Right by the same pack? A survey of the Scriptures renders an explanation that eludes even Fox News!
Jesus indicated that wolves rely on deception to harm the sheep: “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves” (Matthew 7:15). The false prophet here, as elsewhere, is classified with the canine species (II Peter2:22; Revelation 22:15; Philemon 3:2), yet as such he parades as a sheep. Note that the warning is not against thieves, harlots, drunkards, dopers, or communists but against those who appear as sheep! A sheep would appear innocent, gentle, and meek, and this again accurately describes the individuals we are to carefully “look out” for. They do not appear as wolves. The ideal false prophet would be a shrewd, slick, talented, well-bred, mild mannered, polished person who operates primarily through sophistication, subtlety, scholastic appeal, and flattery. Inside he is a wolf (John 10:12). The application in the world of the spiritual is obvious, but it easily extends to the educated, well-spoken government scientist who advocates the re-introduction of wolves to “balance nature.”
Those ignorant of the Bible have no idea that nature is presently intended by God Almighty to be out of balance (Romans 8:22). The introduction of sin on this planet brought consequences that testify of a cursed globe. Hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, grasshoppers, locusts and dozens of other calamities lend voices to a choir of disasters that are all off key. Liberals seek to restore harmony in creation without the ability to change the disposition of the participants. The power of regeneration is reserved for a coming, conquering king rather than a “foolish, idol shepherd” (Zechariah 11:15-17). The multiplication of wolves in this present age doesn’t even qualify as a cheap imitation of the capability of the King of kings when “thy kingdom come” is put on full display. “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them” (Isaiah 11:6). The briefest survey of the entire chapter leaves no doubt as to who will have the authority to authorize and activate this “balance in nature.”
In the meanwhile the alpha wolf of this world is characterized as a god (II Corinthians 4:4), resulting in a diabolical, insatiable desire to be worshipped. Being “more subtil than any beast of the field” (Genesis 3:1), he finds a certain satisfaction in being reverenced covertly through the objects that represent him. Simultaneous to this twisted idolization is a jealous wrath against his primary competitor and anything that pictures the Author of creation (Matthew 4:1-11).
I realize we are now in territory that’s a little heavy for liberal lightweights, but try to hang in there and learn something. “Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices” (Song of Solomon 8:14). The roe and hart are the female and male of the deer family which types the beloved who is Jesus Christ (Song of Solomon 1:8-10). Not only is the deer family illustrative of Christ, but also of the church (Song of Solomon 4:5; 7:3) and a good wife (Proverbs 5:19).
A great conflict continues in the world of the unseen (II Kings 6:8-23; Ephesians 6:10-18) which frequently manifests itself in the physical universe. Left wing animal rights activists are often pawns on the chessboard of a superior intellect who blinds them to simple truth. What is more humane – a quick kill with a 30 caliber or a crippled animal being torn apart, piece by piece? What we observe in nature is but a fractional analogy of a far greater reality…but there is a great Shepherd Who can save you from a ravenous predator who would ravage your soul.
