I’ve been thinking a lot about knees lately. It’s not that I find any of them particularly attractive, leaving us to the assumption that the emphasis of the mini skirt must be something else. On July 24th surgeons installed a new one on my right leg which will hopefully provide painless mobility along with the ability to leap tall buildings at a single bound. Over the last couple of years it has become increasingly obvious that well-functioning knees, according to the design of their Creator, are a huge bonus. The doc said I had zero cartilage left, which if I understand it correctly, is the cushion between the femur and tibia. At any rate, that lack of cushion reduces the situation known as “bone on bone” to “grinder on grinder”. Most can remember those charts of progressive evolution featuring various Neanderthals walking in a bent over position. My conclusion is mutation, metamorphosis, or whatever you choose to call it, forgot to provide the necessary buffer in the joints, resulting in a gait similar to that of Grandpa Walton. I can’t imagine how those dudes ever caught enough critters to become carnivores. How many millions of years did it take the cartilage to catch up with the bones? No wonder the cave men always looked so grumpy. A diet of mushrooms, wild onions and tree bark undoubtedly contributed to a dour disposition.
Any circumstance that requires excessive thought requires me to resort to a higher authority than Fox News, and so it seemed compelling to observe what God has to say on the subject. Interestingly, when the Bible mentions knees, the majority of the contexts indicate a bending, bowing, kneeling or worshipping, rendering reverence in the process of acknowledging a greater power. That principle seems to be universally understood in the courts of kings, queens, popes, and other human dignitaries…only NFL players could miss the larger application. In taking a knee, from a Biblical point of view, they submit a high degree of acquiescence to the flag they bow before. We understand that is not the intended spirit of the behavior, but elevated ignorance is often a source of amusement to the wise. “The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness” (Proverbs 15:2).
The bellwether scripture concerning knees is definitely and defiantly political in nature: “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven , and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10,11). This kneeling and confession will include every Atheist, Agnostic, Skeptic, Infidel, Taoist, Communist, Catholic, Buddhist, Confucianist, Muslim, Socialist, Brahman, Existentialist, Hindu, Jew, Protestant, Satanist, Cultist, Pragmatist, Spiritist, Unitarian, Deist, Pantheist, and Polytheist in the universe. They will all hit the deck and cry: “Jesus Christ is Lord!” Small wonder the Bible has been declared “hate literature”. In the final analysis, this last demand will be obeyed.
The curtain is about to fall. Everyone is on stage. The orchestra has stopped. There is a ghastly hush. The last review has scrutinized the lives, thoughts, motives, speech and deeds of 90 billion people (give or take). The examining (Job 26) and cross-examining (Psalm 51:4; Romans 3:4) is over. Every mouth has been stopped (Romans 3:19); all the questions have been answered (Matthew 22). Time has run out, and there stand billions of people about to experience what they were taught (and believed) could never happen. But now, everybody is a “convert”. You can’t find a skeptic or an agnostic in the pack—and now all the actors must take a bow! Since we saved, born again, blood-bought, Bible believers have already “bowed the knee” (see the type in Genesis 41:42,43), it won’t bother us in the least. It would be a pleasure---any time!
And before that curtain drops on the stage and the lights go out, that great prince of darkness, the veteran of ancient days, that old battle-scarred, pock-marked, weather-beaten genius of Ezekiel 28 who “deceiveth the whole world” (Revelation 12:9) enters and kneels; and, then, before all his children, cohorts, followers, principalities, powers, admirers, victims, and worshippers, he cries, “Jesus Christ is Lord!!”
Bow the knee now or bow it then, you will bow it. This includes the Supreme Court, Congress and every President that has ever lived. Liberal or Conservative, you will confess Christ now or confess Him then, and you will do it “to the glory of God the Father” who gave Jesus the “pre-eminence” in all things, for “in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily” (Colossians 1:15-19; 2:9).
This presented scenario is more than enough reason for Christ rejecters to hate Him, His Word, His code of conduct, His people and His coming kingdom, even though many have found themselves praying…”Thy kingdom come.” America achieved greatness because there was a day when the pre-eminence of Jesus Christ was far more tolerated than it is today. All downward trends are in direct relationship to our attitude concerning the King of kings and Lord of lords!
