At this writing America is in the throes of a so-called government shutdown affecting 12% of federal functions and employees. The probability is great that some creative budgetary reshuffling could eliminate 12% of the U. S. Government permanently, but what politician wants their name attached to that effort? Benjamin Botkin once wrote that during World War II a Japanese spy had been sent to Washington to spot targets for a Japanese raid. Reporting to his superiors, the spy said,” It is useless to bomb Washington. The American government has been very forehanded. If you completely destroy one building and everyone in it, you accomplish nothing, for they already have two other buildings completely staffed with people doing exactly the same thing.”
Without apologies to anyone, history (including the Bible) records the collapses of mighty empires. Historians lay the causes at the feet of many reasons but entropy and destruction always find their way to the graveyards of nations. Bloated government, encouraged by pork barrel politics and greedy lobbyists, will contribute to America’s epitaph. In the meantime, politicians attend the funerals of former presidents, glibly repeating in feigned unison, “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be the name. They kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:9,10) If ever questioned (which never happens by the liberal media) about the literal reality of the “Lord’s Prayer,” liberal theologians provide them cover by suggesting the verses only imply a spiritual kingdom.
A giant stumbling block lies in the path of this perverted theology. Namely, Scripture that is frequently utilized in conjunction with the attached promises of Christmas: “..for unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end; upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” (Isaiah 9:6,7)
The same prophet was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write a polar opposite description of the Christ he had just exalted…”he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.” (Isaiah 53:2,3)
This apparent contradiction appears many times throughout the Old Testament, leaving the writers often baffled by what the Apostle Paul later received as clear revelation (Ephesians 3:1-2). One of the greatest proofs that the prophets didn’t write from their own minds but from the mind of God is the conspicuous discrepancies which they wrote. They had to trust that the Lord knew more than they did. The problem was they didn’t see any distinction between the first and second coming of Christ. The difficulty remains for many to this day.
To force feed “and on earth peace, good will toward men” into the present world is to ignorantly ignore the battles of Argonne, Chateau, Thierry, Soissons, Verdun, Marne, Flanders, Belleau Wood, Vimy Ridge, Bull Run, Antietam, Gettysburg, Shiloh, Fredericksburg, Vicksburg, Chancellorsville, Chattanooga, Atlanta, Wilderness, Tobruk, Halfaya Pass, Guam, Leyte Gulf, Omaha Beach, Dunkirk, Reichswald, Leningrad, Kursk, Kiev, Warsaw, Salerno, Anzio, Monte Cassino, St. Vith, Bastogne, Pusan, Inchon, Seoul, Osan, Taegu, Tinian, Pork Chop Hill, Pyongyang, Burma, Metz, Woodpecker ridge, Heartbreak Ridge, Saigon, Da Nang, Dien Bien Phu, Blenheim, Agincourt, Crecy, Concord, Lexington, Charleston, Brest, Saint-Lo, Torgan, Moscow, Waterloo, Kuwait, Sinai, Iraq, Afghanistan, and a myriad of genocides on the African Continent. There is no peace on earth!
The first advent of Jesus Christ provided mankind with a Saviour Who died to pay for our sins. His next advent will produce the mother of all government shutdowns for “the government will be upon his shoulder.” The Old Testament contains 1,845 references to this grand event, accompanied by 318 in the New Testament. For every prophecy on the first coming Christ, there are eight on His second coming.
Queen Victoria, after hearing a sermon on the significance of the coming again of Jesus Christ, was visibly shaken with great emotion. She asked to see the preacher after the service who then enquired of the occasion. She said, “Oh, sir, it was what you said about the coming again of the world’s rightful king.” He asked, “Why are you so moved?” The Queen replied, “I could wish to be here when He comes!” And then with emotion indescribable, she added, “that I might lay this crown at His blessed feet.”
Would it be possible to find a world leader or house of legislators that will welcome the king of righteousness? The chances of that are slim and none, but this is of no consequences because “the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.”
