New Testament Christians are operating under the ever increasing impression that many elected and unelected officials in government are their enemies. When those in authority express continual hatred toward Israel, they put our entire nation at risk for divine judgment (Genesis 12:1-3). Muslims have been allowed to immigrate in sufficient numbers to declare Sharia law in wide swaths of cities - all the while asserting this as their eventual goal for the entire country. Not only is this detrimental to our traditional values, but it is opposed to Scriptural precedent: “Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 24:22). The same chapter includes a story of a young man whose father was an Egyptian. The son thought it appropriate to “blaspheme the name of the Lord, and cursed.” A severe verdict was pronounced upon the offender. Muslims regularly announce death sentences on those who offend Allah, but we are told to tolerate their disdain for the God of the Bible…in fact, in many cases it is covertly encouraged. In Barack Obama’s book “Audacity of Hope” he wrote: “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”
Bernie Sanders has recently announced his “New Green Deal” which will in his own estimation cost sixteen trillion dollars. Bernie, Elizabeth Warren and all their liberal friends refuse to listen to credible scientists on the other side of “climate change” because it does not advance their power grab agenda. They are counting on a sufficient number of America’s youth who have been indoctrinated with biased propaganda to vote for debt suicide. Of course, both sides of the aisle have been guilty of encumbering us with unsustainable debt. Are the wicked our friends? “The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth” (Psalm 37:21).
Each one of these leftist radical ideas will raise taxes to levels that will reduce the average working American to poverty because the swamp has no mercy. Every raiser of taxes in Scripture is characterized as an evil person, including Rehoboam, Jehoiakim, Caesar and most importantly, the antichrist (see Daniel 11:20,21). John said the spirit of the antichrist is already in the world (see I John 4:3). That being the case, all those favoring more taxes are motivated by an unseen but wicked spirit.
Senator Sander’s new deal includes reducing the military budget drastically with a willingness to place all of us in greater jeopardy. Even as America has many adversaries, so did ancient Israel. When Nehemiah was commissioned to lead a troop to rebuild the broken down walls of Jerusalem, he faced a plethora of enemies who surrounded the entire project. His solution was to put everyone on red alert and arm every capable citizen to the maximum (see Nehemiah 4). In today’s world this cannot be done on a barebones budget. A brief sidebar….it’s rather incredulous that the several senators campaigning for president are running all over the country but spending little or no time in Washington doing the jobs for which we are paying them. Should we pass legislation mandating that no sitting senator can run for the White House? That would certainly cull the herd!
The Left worships at the altar of abortion, masquerading it under the placard of choice. Is it not safe to say that all who endorse this barbaric practice are enemies of the unborn? The Lord reminded Jeremiah that “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee” (Jeremiah 1:5). Is it reasonable to assume that God’s foreknowledge of personal identity only applies to the prophet and no other?
These are but a few examples illustrating the believer’s sense of apprehension. Domestic enemies are a sad but regrettable reality. The Christian’s conundrum is set forth in Luke 6:27,28: “..but I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you. Bless them that curse you and pray for them which despitefully use you.” A nagging question is…exactly how do we pray for them? What is it that we petition the Lord for? David prayed for the destruction of his enemies, but he operated under the strictness of the law that required an eye for an eye. We find ourselves in a dispensation of grace which harbors no malice. Since we reject the notion of praying for our enemies’ hurt, harm or destruction, we are forced to consider the alternatives.
First and foremost, our request should be directed toward the spiritual welfare of each individual desiring God to create circumstances that will motivate each one to seek truth (John 14:6). Concerning their political activities, we are well within reasonable boundaries to pray for continual confusion within the ranks of the adversaries.
“Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that devise my hurt” (Psalm 35:4). AMEN!
