Mother Pelosi recently exhibited a meltdown when a reporter asked her if she hated Donald Trump. In complete exasperation she retreated to her Catholic faith, explaining that her religion prohibits hate. We are then to suppose that Nancy has never entertained the slightest notion of every violating any dictates of her church. The subject of abortion will remain in the basement awaiting its resurrection on another day. The justification for re-entry will be cloaked in a flimsy tapestry labeled “reproductive health care, made in China.”
The nurturing matriarch even indicated that she prays daily for the President and has stated previously that she prays for the impeachment process. It may be a benefit to America if Nancy would publish the context of those prayers. They may serve as a pattern for the less religious. A word by word text wouldn’t be necessary, but a general paraphrase would do nicely. If her prayers are Biblical, (and why wouldn’t they be?), they must include intercession for the president’s personal health and welfare, for wisdom as he leads the nation, for him to withstand the withering attacks of his enemies, and advancement of his own spiritual life. Her petitions, if serious, would include entreaty for the Trump family and all of his deplorable supporters…we are, after all, “poor in spirit” (Matthew 5:3) and in desperate need of supplication. Some of us who cling to our guns, Bibles and religion prayed in that manner for Barack Obama, even though we vehemently disagreed with his policies. Surely Mother Superior would do no less on our behalf!
Advancing from the semi-sarcastic to the deadly serious, an accurate definition of hate can only be obtained from the Scriptures, for its Author knows the human heart better than anyone. The divine record renders several examples of unvarnished hate and the reasons for it. The first instance of undeterred malice appears just four chapters into Genesis. Cain’s hostility was so great toward his brother Abel that it caused him to commit premeditated murder. The story is cemented in history and literature, but the reason for homicide is hazy to many. Just a cursory reading of the account removes the fog, revealing an age old demon of depravity --- jealously of greater acceptance. Cain’s offering of vegetables was rejected by God because it didn’t fit the prescribed qualifications. Abel submitted a lamb to be sacrificed which the Lord accepted as a preview of His Lamb on Calvary. But, you can’t get blood from a turnip, and Cain deeply resented the rejection. The nation’s acceptance of Mr. Trump in the last election has angered the Left, leaving them with blood in their eyes but no Lamb’s blood on their heart.
Once again in the first book of the Scriptures we read: “..and Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, the days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob” (Genesis 27:41). Esau was not content with his own blessing which included excellent crops, sufficient rain, military power and eventual dominion (see verses 39-40). If he could not obtain the whole enchilada (House, Senate, and White House, along with the majority of the Supreme Court) he would hate with the spirit of Antifa.
Before we conclude navigating Genesis, another glaring paradigm of utter enmity surfaces. “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colors. And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceable unto him” (Genesis 37:3,4). Once again, the green-eyed monster of jealousy affected the ill-speaking news media. Beyond that, the scorn was held in abeyance until Joseph spoke of his dreams which indicated a political future for himself that was unacceptable to his brothers. The offered solution sold little brother into Egyptian slavery all the while lying to their father and the public. Little did they realize that this was step one toward the fulfillment of Joseph’s dreams.
The President has exercised strong opinions about bad trade alliances with Mexico, Canada, China and other countries that former administrations have forged. In all cases, he has been right. He has told other members of NATO to pay their agreed fair share. Can anyone with the brains of a cabbage worm contest this? He has insisted that illegal immigration be stopped and that diversity is only as good as it advances the welfare of the whole of the country. In addition to these positive policies, the President has exhibited an attitude toward Israel that encourages any Bible believer. His ideas have proven to be superior to past leaderships. Superiority was the essence of Joseph’s dreams but they generated enough hate to plan his demise.
It’s unnecessary to venture past the first book of the Scriptures to formulate a clear understanding of the cause and effect of hate. In spite of Ms. Pelosi’s rhetoric, the evidence speaks volumes while pointing an accusatory finger at Nancy and her caucus. Experience and the Word of God indicate it’s impossible to hate anyone that you pray for, unless the prayer itself is an extension of pre-meditated malice and forethought. Talk is cheap, like chattering sparrows that travel in flocks, but the eagle of Truth soars alone amidst the clouds, screaming defiance at the rugged peaks and jagged lightning.
